Born in 1953 in Montreal, for the past 40 years I have resided north of Ottawa near Wakefield, Quebec. Having obtained a B.A. VisuaL Arts from the University of Ottawa in 1979, I have earned my living solely from my art, many years as a glass artist, and most recently as a painter.
Early on in the pandemic I began a series of portrait paintings, titled “Idiosyncrasies of Humans”. These explored irony and humor in society today. They were relatively large paintings, and I often had a lot of left over mixed paint. Not wanting to waste paint, I began the practice of always having several small wood panels ready to apply this left-over paint.
The result was the creation of several small whimsical paintings. The first layer (using the left-over paint) is abstract in nature, and always unexpected. I would look at them and often see figures (perhaps an over-sized woman carrying a purse, or a man with large feet sitting in a chair, etc.)
As time progressed, I began to have favorites, so I would make stencils of some of the figures that I liked the most, and recreate them (using entirely different color combinations).
Finally, I rarely use a paint brush (except for the fine details of a face). Instead, I mostly use drywall tools and various pieces of lace. (I press the lace onto the paint before it dries, and it leaves an impression.
These paintings are meant to be amusing, so hopefully they will put a smile on your face.
